My Adoption Family is pleased to highlight the work of inspirational adopter based in Scotland hat have gone the extra length to help transform a child’s life.
Today we interview, mum of two, Sana Mahmud * (name changed for confidentiality) on her inspirational journey to adoption.
Tell us a bit about yourself and how you embarked on your journey to adoption?
I am a mother to 2 children who are older now and moved out of home. As my husband passed away I have just been at home and feeling the sadness of living far from my children. I decided that I could use my parenting skills and first decided to become a foster carer which led me to foster 2 boys for the last few years. We grew a bond and I applied to adopt the children and was successful and am so happy to be able to bring up these boys and give them the stability they need.
How many children have you fostered to date?
I have fostered 2 children and it is the best decision of my life.
Did you face any challenges when choosing to adopt?
Unfortunately, I did face challenges as many people from the community felt that I was too old to adopt and wondered why I would do it seeing as I already have two of my own children. I disagreed with this approach and think that if you can give back to society you should.
How do you find the process to becoming an adoptive parent?
It was a process that I had to go through but it was well worth it and I think it helped because I already had the experience of fostering children prior to applying for adoption. I never looked back on my decision and would want others in the community to consider adoption and helping children who need a family.
What advice would you give to those who might be thinking about adoption?
I would encourage anyone who would want to adopt to find out information, do your research, see if you meet the requirements and speak to other people who have already been through the process. It is such a rewarding experience and one that I am so happy to have done.
What is the best thing about adopting a child?
The best thing for me is seeing the children grow up and being part of their life and journey. I feel honoured to have been given this opportunity to adopt them and I want to provide the best life possible for my two sons.
